Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance that is found naturally in the body and helps convert food into energy. CoQ10 is found in almost every cell in the body, and it is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause. Research studies indicate that CoQ10 may help with heart-related conditions, because it can improve energy production in cells, prevent blood clot formation, and act as an antioxidant.
Coenzyme Q10 was discovered in 1957 and has been used as a dietary supplement since 1963, at that time costing over $1,000 per gram to produce. In 1970 Japanese scientists developed a more affordable fermentation/extraction process. Today, Coenzyme Q10 is mostly produced from strains of blue green algae.
